BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY :

Originally the Riesenschnauzer (Giant Schnauzer) was used in the region of Southern Germany to drive cattle.  Around the turn of the century, determined breeders realised that he had outstanding working capabilities and particularly valuable traits in character, so they begun the selection.  Since 1913 the breed has been registered in a stud book, and already in 1925 the Giant Schnauzer has officially been recognised as a working dog. From the beginning of the 21st Century it seems that this breed should be enlisted on the species soon to be extinct list since towards the end of the 20th Century its working and utility capabilities became severely diminished, so it was necessary to adjust the requirements and impose only making the specimen acquainted slightly with 2 or 3 commands to be  accepted in the show ring.

GENERAL APPEARANCE :

Higher than what the average hight is, rafined but well fed with long and soft silky coat. Cheerful and bursting with energy. If the dog seems a bit nervous, it is not necessarily a fault, it may be interpreted like a part of its temperament. This breed has all the characteristics of a social, companion breed.

Its aspect provokes tenderness.

It is preffered that it shows few differences between sexes, in order that only the expert eye in the show ring can tell the male from the female.

IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS :

· Allongated build in which height at the withers is longer than the body length.

 · The length of the head (measured from the tip of the nose to the occiput) corresponds to not less than 1/5 of the length of the topline (measured from the withers to the set on of the tail).

 BEHAVIOR / TEMPERAMENT :

Typical characteristics of this dog are his good natured expression, the look of complete loyalty in his eyes and the happy wagging of his tail. His only reason for existences being the show ring, his behaviour outside it can vary and it is not relevant.

 HEAD

 CRANIAL REGION :

Skull : Not large. The dimension and the form are not too prominent. Stop defined. Brows prominent.

FACIAL REGION :

Jaws/Teeth : Scissor or even bite (42 pure white teeth), 41 or 40 is accepted, but not less than 36 for a good show career.  The chewing muscles are not developed and the cheeks must not interfere with the shape of the head (with the beard).

Eyes : Of any form, color or position. Expression is sweet and benevolent. Sometimes it can be frightened (this is the typical expression when the Giant Schnauzer is in the show ring or if he is threatened outside of the show ring). It is highly undesirable to have the intelligent expression because it would compromise its general aspect and it would prevent its use.

Other parts of the head are covered with abundant coat soft and silky to the touch, so that the groomer can make  the appearance similar to the Schnauzer.

NECK :

The subtle, long and thin, vertically implanted in the withers, without the arch that can make it look heavy.  Throat skin tight-fitting without folds.
